How it works
When a book has audio enabled, contributors can:
- Record audio directly in the browser (no extra software needed)
- Upload an audio file from their device
Accepted formats: mp3, m4a, wav, ogg, webm. Maximum length: 10 minutes. Maximum file size: 50 MB on the web and in the app; 20 MB via messaging channels (WhatsApp, Telegram, MMS).
Recording in the browser
- Open the web submission form for your book.
- Click Record and allow microphone access when prompted.
- Speak your memory, then click Stop.
- Preview the recording before you submit; re-record if needed.
- Add an optional text caption and click Submit.
Browser recording works on most modern browsers (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge). Mobile browsers are supported on iOS 14.3+ and Android.
AI transcription
Audio submissions can also be transcribed automatically once they are approved. The transcript is generated using AI (Whisper) and appears below the audio player on the public book page.
- Transcription happens in the background after approval; it may take a minute or two for longer recordings.
- Transcripts are editable by book owners and admins from the submission detail page.
- If transcription fails (e.g. poor audio quality), the submission still displays with the audio player alone.
Audio via messaging channels
Voice messages sent through WhatsApp, Telegram, and MMS (via SMS on supported carriers) are accepted as audio submissions if the book has audio enabled. These are processed the same way as uploaded audio files and appear in the moderation queue like any other submission.
Audio display mode
Book owners can choose whether the audio player or the transcript appears first on the public page. This setting is found in your book's settings under Audio display mode. Options are Player first (default) and Transcript first.
