Subscriptions are managed through Stripe, our payment processor. You can pay for premium features in two ways: a per-book subscription that upgrades exactly one book, or a package that gives you several book slots to assign as you choose. Both are managed from the same place.
Upgrading a single book
Visit the pricing page, select the book you want to upgrade, and click Upgrade book on the plan you want. You'll be redirected to a secure Stripe checkout page to enter your payment details.
Buying a package
If you have more than one book that needs paid features, a package is usually cheaper. On the pricing page, scroll to the Packages section, choose the bundle you want, and click Purchase. Once checkout is complete, your book slots are added to your account immediately and you can assign them to any of your books from each book's plan picker.
See the Packages and book slots guide for how to assign and move slots.
Managing existing subscriptions and packages
If you have any active subscription, per-book or package, visit the pricing page and click Manage subscriptions. This opens the Stripe customer portal where you can:
- Switch a per-book subscription to a different plan
- Update your payment method
- View your billing history and invoices
- Cancel any subscription or package
Changing the plan on a subscribed book
A book that already has an active, renewing subscription cannot go through checkout again; the plan picker tells you to manage it from billing settings instead. Switch plans through the Stripe customer portal so you are never billed twice for the same book. If you have already cancelled that book's subscription (so it stops at the end of the current period), you can buy a new plan for it straight away, and the old subscription is cancelled the moment the purchase completes.
If the terms change while you're deciding
Checkout only ever charges you for the terms you were shown. If a plan is updated after your page has loaded, checkout stops and redisplays that plan's current terms instead of continuing. Nothing is charged, and you carry on from there. We would rather ask twice than put you on a plan you were not shown.
Cancelling a per-book subscription
Cancel through the Stripe customer portal. After cancellation:
- That book's paid features remain active until the end of its current billing period.
- After that, the book reverts to the Free plan.
- Your books and submissions are preserved; you just lose access to premium features on that book.
Cancelling a package
Cancel through the Stripe customer portal in the same way. After cancellation:
- The package's slots remain available until the end of the current billing period.
- After that, the slots are removed from your account and any books that were using them revert to the Free plan.
- Your books and submissions are preserved; only the paid features are disabled.
